District Highlights 2011 Census

  • Imphal West is a valley district where the capital of the state, Imphal, is situated. The district has an area of 519 sq. km. and ranks seventh in terms of area and covers only 2.32 percent of the total area of the state.The total number of villages in the district is 124 of which 17 villages are uninhabited.
  • The density of population per sq.km. is very high in the district and has 998 persons against the state density of 128 persons.
  • In terms of population the district has 18.1 percent of the total population of the state and ranks first position in population size among the 9 districts.
  • Sex ratio of the district is 1031 females for every 1000 males and is well above the state sex ratio of 985.
  • The total literacy rate of the district is 86.1 percent and is also higher than the state literacy rate of 76.9 percent. The literacy rate of the Scheduled Tribes (89.8 percent) and that of the Scheduled Caste population (81.1 percent).
  • Scheduled Tribes constitute only 4.6 per cent of the total population against the state average of 40.8 percent. The proportion of Scheduled Castes population in the district is 3.2 percent which is a little lower than the state average of 3.4 percent.
  • The average size of the household in the district is 4.6 persons which is a little lower than the state average of 5.1 persons.
  • The percentage of population in the age-group 0-6 years is 11.9 percent while the state average is 14.2 percent meaning that the fertility level of the district is lower than the other districts..
  • Sex ratio for the child population is 949 and is much lower than the total sex ratio of the district (1031). State sex ratio for 0-6 years population is 930.
  • Work participation rate for the total population is 41.2 percent, the stateaverage being 45.6 percent. Main workers constitute 32.1 percent of thetotal workers. The percentage of marginal workers is 9.1 percent and therest are non-workers.
  • Other Workers’ is the main constituent of the total workers in the district accounting for 67.2 percent of the total workers. Cultivators and agricultural labourers constitute 17.4 percent and 6.0 percent respectively. Percentage of household industry workers (9.3 percent of the total workers) is second highest of all the districts (state average is 7.0 percent).
